Joyce Rondaij is a practical theologian who focuses on how literary writings reflect on what it means to be human. She defended her dissertation entitled "Primo Levi's Afters. Reading Primo Levi Theologically after God" in October 2020. Subject of her PhD research was Italian Jewish writer Primo Levi, focusing on the question how to speak about humanity and God after Auschwitz. She combined the fields of theology, philosophy and literary studies in order to enhance the understanding of Levi’s oeuvre.
The Dutch edition, "Primo Levi na God. Verhalen van een nieuwe Bijbel", is published by Uitgeverij Verbum in June 2021.
Joyce now works on a research proposal on refugee literature, building on her research on Levi. She is a member of the Amsterdam Network for Interdisciplinairy Studies on Eating (ANISE). In relation to food, her research interests lie with the topics of hunger and vulnerability, and human’s interrelations with animals and the planet (represented in literature).
