Boards of Examiners
The Board of Examiners is an independent committee that safeguards the quality of examinations and degree certificates. In this capacity, the Board establishes rules for the orderly administration of examinations, assesses requests for exemptions, considers reports of suspected fraud, and determines the results of examinations.
Board of Examiners of the PThU
The PThU Board of Examiners is responsible for the following programmes:
- Bachelor of Theology, Utrecht
- Premaster, Utrecht
- Master of Theology, Utrecht
- Master of Theology (Congregational Ministry), Utrecht
- Master of Theology (Ordained Ministry), Groningen
The PThU also participates in the Joint Bachelor's programme (PThU/VU, currently being phased out) and in the Bachelor's programme in Theology at the University of Groningen. Separate Boards of Examiners have been established for these programmes (see below).
As a student, after consulting your study adviser, you should contact the Board of Examiners for matters such as requests for exemption from examinations or parts thereof, special requests relating to your study programme, or adjustments in connection with a disability.
Requests must be submitted in accordance with the applicable procedures. You should use the request form (see below) and ensure that all supporting information is complete and legible. Failure to do so may result in delays in processing your request or in your request being declared inadmissible. See below for further information.
Decisions of the Board of Examiners may be appealed to the Appeals Board for Examinations.
Composition and procedures of the Board of Examiners
The PThU has one Board of Examiners for its Bachelor's and Master's programmes and the Premaster. Given this broad remit, the Board is divided into two subcommittees: one for the Bachelor's programme and the Premaster, and one for the Master's programmes. The Board of Examiners nevertheless remains collectively responsible for the assessment of all programmes. The Rules of Procedure can be found here.
To safeguard the quality of examinations, and thereby the quality of the degree certificates, the Board of Examiners has established a set of Rules and Guidelines for Assessment. These are intended for both students and lecturers.
The Board of Examiners will meet once more during the current academic year, on 11 June 2026. The meeting dates for the next academic year have yet to be determined.
Submitting requests
There are no fixed deadlines for submitting requests. The Board of Examiners aims to reach a decision within a reasonable period. According to its own regulations, this is in principle within six weeks, although in practice the Board aims to respond more quickly.
If you wish to submit a request, first consult your study adviser, who may be able to provide important guidance. You should then submit your request yourself using this form. Please have your personal details, such as your student number, available when submitting your request.
You may upload a limited number of documents with your request. Please explain your request by including all relevant information, while keeping your explanation concise. In some cases, uploading supporting documents is mandatory. Please note that only PDF documents are accepted. Where possible, combine related information into a single file. Ensure that all text and images are correctly oriented (readable without being rotated or upside down).

Please note: if you wish to request an adjustment because of a disability, you cannot submit the request yourself. Please contact your study adviser, who will submit the request on your behalf.
Including an elective course in the free elective component (Master's): permission required or not?
Would you like to take a Master's course as an elective at another recognised Dutch university and include the credits in the free elective component of your programme? You may do so without obtaining prior permission from the Board of Examiners. After completing the course, you should submit the original examination slip or transcript of results, or a certified copy, to the Student Affairs Office without delay. They will ensure that the credits are processed administratively. Courses that are equivalent to, or largely overlap with, compulsory components of your programme are, of course, not permitted. If in doubt, please get in touch.
If the institution where you wish to take the course requires a statement of approval, you can contact the Administrative Secretary via examencommissie {a} pthu.nl.
Would you like to take an elective course abroad and include the credits in the free elective component of your programme? Or would you like to take a compulsory component of your examination programme elsewhere (as a substitute)? In that case, you do need permission from the Board of Examiners. Board of Examiners for the Bachelor's Programme in Theology (Joint Degree, PThU/VU)
Students enrolled in the Bachelor's Programme in Theology (Joint Degree, PThU/VU) in Amsterdam should submit their requests to the Board of Examiners for Theology (Joint Degree). Requests must be submitted via the online forms. The Rules and Guidelines are also available on that page.
Board of Examiners for the Bachelor's Programme in Theology (University of Groningen, with PThU track)
The PThU provides a specialised track within the Bachelor's programme in Theology at the University of Groningen. Students who successfully complete the programme, including this track, are eligible for direct admission to the Master's programmes. Responsibility for the Bachelor's programme itself, and for its Board of Examiners, rests with the University of Groningen.
