G.A. Makkinga

PhD-researcher
Worship / formation

Introduction
Allon Makkinga (1997) is a PhD-researcher in practical theology within the broader research project Soil of the Protestant Theological University (PThU). Allon’s doctoral research studies how churches can manage church-owned land in a theologically responsible and context-sensitive manner. The project adopts a twofold approach.

First, through action research conducted in collaboration with churches and diaconal organizations, he explores potential good practices for the management of church-owned land. The intended outcome is a policy vision and guideline to support churches and diaconal organizations in developing a long-term and theologically informed policy for their land. Second, building on the action research and supported by an extensive theological and interdisciplinary literature study, the study develops a theological vision of ‘soil’, specifically in relation to the leasing of church-owned land.

Background
Allon holds a Research Master’s degree in Religious Studies from the University of Groningen, where he specialized in the intersection of religion, politics, and (public) policy. Prior to starting his PhD, he worked on the development of housing policy. In his research he combines his academic expertise with his practical experience in policy-making.
