Theological Film Club with James Butler

3 December 2025 19:00

Come along to the Theological Film Night on 3 December! James Butler, research fellow at the PThU, will lead the discussion of a film about a monster. Are monsters always evil? And what does the film teach us about hope and salvation? The language of the evening is English.

About the film

“Ever since I first saw this film, I’ve wanted to have a theological conversation about it,” says James Butler. “It is a film that is gripping as a story and raises big questions about life and death, about hope and despair. What fascinates me is the way the film manages to hold on to pain, fear and darkness, and yet finds a salvific arc that is not trite but deep and layered. I would like to explore how Christian theology might sustain a similarly complex account, and in what ways the film’s narratives of fear, hope and salvation resonate with – or are in tension with – theological approaches.”

What is the Theological Film Club?

The Theological Film Club is a community for people who share a love of film and theology. Once a month we host a film night in Utrecht, with an introduction by an inspiring guest and a convivial drink afterwards to continue the conversation. Admission is free; drinks afterwards are at your own expense. The Theological Film Club is an initiative of the Protestant Theological University and the Utrecht University of Theology.

Curious about the film title?

We pay film rights in order to screen the films. To keep the film nights affordable, we have opted for the budget licence. This means we are not permitted to share the film title publicly, but we do share it in the WhatsApp and Signal group.
