A study week in Hungary

A group of third year students from the joint bachelor of theology of the Protestant Theological University (PThU) and VU University Amsterdam, and their lecturers (Prof. Heleen Zorgdrager, PThU and dr. Leon van den Broeke, VU) visited Debrecen, Hungary, from April 23-27, 2014 in the framework of the joint bachelor module on 'Community and Diversity'.

During their visit the students acquainted themselves with the clerical practice in Debrecen and the challenges that arrise from a different cultural context. They also paid a visit to Debrecen Reformed Theological University, where they attended a student conference together with Hungarian students. The theme of the conference was ‘Community and Diversity in the Church’.

On the subject of Community and Diversity

The module of 'Community and Diversity' focused on the development of an academically supported and personal vision of contextual communities of faith in current settings, with specific attention to the factor of diversity (gender and position of minorities). Students examined the specifics of ecclesiological theory and practice, both from ‘an outgoing perspective’ (role of religion in society) and from ‘an inward perspective’ (practical ecclesiology).

VU and PThU

The joint bachelor of theology has been offered by VU and the Protestant Theological University (PThU) since September 2011. The institutions are both responsible for half the courses in this programme.
